Each contour in a Birkenstock footbed is precisely placed to stretch, flex and move naturally. The Birkenstock Footbed
There is a soft, anatomically shaped cork latex core between the two jute layers. The lower jute layer provides stability while the upper, denser jute layer absorbs moisture. Layering these together along with the suede leather lining ensures an optimum climate for your feet and unsurpassed wearing comfort.

Birkenstock use only high quality materials, whether they are leather or animal free. The leather used for Birkenstock® uppers is aproximately 3mm thick and very supple. We value the natural properties of our leather and don't use artificial dyes. This way the leather remains open-pored with active breathing qualities. Although all leathers used by us are natural leathers, we distinguish the different optical appearances and handling using the following categoreis:


Natural Leather
Our natural leather is identifiable by its typically textured graining and colouring. We do not correct these natural markings so the individual character of the naturally matt surface remains intact. However, these marks can be brushed off with a soft nubuck/suede brush or even by rubbing it with your thumb.

construction Smooth Leather
Our smooth leather has a fine texture with a slightly shiny surface, which varies in its colour. This leather finish has a high degree of elasticity and tensile strength, as well as a resistance to abrasion.

The Suede Leather is also extremely strong and supple and is, as with all other leathers used by Birkenstock®, dyed rather than sprayed, allowing maximum breathability. The natural differences in the surface texture are unavoidable and prove that only genuine leather is used.



Nubuck leather used by Birkenstock® originates from the best European hides. Nubuck leather is a full grain leather whose natural characteristics are enhanced by buffing the top layer. This creates the velvety finish unique to nubuck leather.

The bark-like surface pattern gives this Birkenstock® leather a particularly expressive character.
construction Birko Flor®
This material was developed by Birkenstock® as an alternative to leather. Birko Flor® is made of soft acrylic and polyamide felt fibres with a durable smooth leather-like finish.

Birko Flor® Nubuck

This new material has a leather-like surface texture, resembling nubuck and has the same features as Birko Flor®.
construction Wool

Our high quality wool felt is a 100% natural product and is made from sheep's wool. This makes it extremely robust and breathable.

The felt used by Birkenstock is a synthetic textile that is tear resistant, soft to the touch and breathable.

construction Birko Felt
Birko Felt is made of a wool pulp mixture and synthetic fibre felt. This mixture is practically untearable though it is still breathable and skin-friendly.
construction Microfibre

The microfibre used by Birkenstock® is a high quality material with a nubuck-like look. Microfibre is extremely durable and lightweight; it is easy to clean and retains its colour. It is a very breathable material, which ensures a skin-friendly environment for the foot. Microfibre is used both for uppers and as a footbed liner.

construction Polyurethane (PU)
All Birki clogs are made of durable and waterproof polyurethane (PU). This is a very versatile material and has some unique features. The materials low density makes the clogs lightweight but provides high abrasion results. The PU contains innumerable tiny bubbles, which acts as shock absorbers. Polyurethane is produced using environmentally friendly processes, without using the solvents OFC and FC. PU in a non-absorbent material, thus preventing a build-up of bacteria. It also protects against acids and alkaline, making the clogs suitable for laboratory or kitchen work.
construction EVA
Ethylene vinyl acetate has good clarity and gloss, barrier properties, low-temperature toughness, stress-crack resistance, hot-melt adhesive water proof properties. EVA has little or no odor.
construction Buckles
Birkenstock buckles are all made in house by Birkenstock®. Each buckle receives multiple powder-coatings or goes through a galvanising process.
